Two-Minute Drill: a daily NFL play-calling game

One late-game situation, one play call, once a day. You get the ball with the clock running, pick what you would do, and find out how your call graded against every other option the situation allowed.

How a drill works

  1. You get one real late-game spot — down, distance, field position, score and clock — taken from NFL play-by-play data.
  2. You call the play. Run it, throw it, or kick it; the choices on screen are the ones the situation actually allowed.
  3. You get a grade and a day score. Come back tomorrow and your streak grows.

How the grade works

Your grade is how much win probability your call gave up compared with the best call available. A good decision that failed is still graded as a good decision — the outcome is not what gets scored. Your day score is the share of simulated NFL play-callers you beat across the day’s spots, so 80% means your calls gave up less win probability than 80% of them did.

The drill is seeded from the day number, so everyone playing today sees the same situations and is scored on the same scale. There is no account and nothing to sign up for; your streak and history stay in your own browser.

Where the data comes from

Play-by-play data comes from nflverse and is used under CC BY-SA 4.0. Situations are modified and re-aggregated before they become a drill. Two-Minute Drill is fan-made and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NFL or its teams.

Common questions

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no email address, no payment.

Do I need to know football?

The situation is spelled out on screen — down, distance, field position, score and clock — and you pick from the options given, so you can play without knowing a playbook.

Is the drill the same for everyone?

Yes. Each day’s situations are fixed, so every player that day gets the same puzzle and is scored on the same scale.
